From my point of view it is a novel about the depression that is an amalgam of Grapes of Wrath and Confederacy of Dunces.
Nothing came of it, though the results would have surely been staggering for one reason aide another. The book tells of his misadventures as he tries to navigate the Depression with time spent selling door to door, in brothels and in jail.
But redeems himself nekson pretty much avoiding the annoying switch in viewpoint within multiple character scenes that mar his other, otherwise excellent work.
The ice broke and, had he not been rescued, Algren would have died in its freezing waters. In consequence, his aesthetics were not what the new empire wanted, and nor was his subject – the dispossessed – any longer of interest.
