I appreciate what the author is attempting to do, but page long tomes tend to run out of steam and could be told in a more concise fashion. Its important to understand this Evil in it’s purest form so it cannot happen again.
Forty years after his Hitler: I can appreciate what the author was trying to convey but I do feel it was taking on a bit too much and the reader is left somewhat overloaded! This was as true of Lenin and Trotsky as of Stalin.

Parallel Lives” gives us a detailed, compelling and extremely informative portrait of the faces of evil. Stalin did not openly supported and conducted the policy of Genocide, while Hitler did. He definitely wins hands down, no question. Oct 26, AC rated it it was amazing Shelves: Overall, a well-researched book that leaves a reader with a good appreciation of the lives of both these influential individuals of the twentieth century.
Bullock’s prose is smooth, and his descriptions at times are haunting, but most important his historical judgement is sober and unerring, or so it would appear paalelas me. Bullock places the two men side by side, sometimes in the same chapter, sometimes in successive chapters, and sometimes at the same time chronologically, while others at the same phase in their lives.

What I love about this book is it’s scholarly; I can’t stand bullok books about Hitler and Stalin. Enjoyable book to read, not to heavy. As the title suggests, Bullock alternates chapters on Hitler with those on Stalin. Hitler’s rise to power was due to his superior oratorical capabilities that allowed him to re-affirm the self-worth of an anxious country that had lost its confidence after the First World War. He consolidated power through political maneuvering and court plots that eliminated all his opponents leaving him as the sole heir to Lenin once the Bolsheviks were in power. My favourite parts slan the little bit of the personal lives we got of the two men at the beginning of the book as well as the descriptions of figuring out the best way of killing the Jews, that part was extremely hard to read but at hitlef sparked some emotion.
